The Art Of War

The Art Of War was written roughly 2500 years ago by the Chinese general Sun Tzu. It is a book of strategy written for the use of a king in times of war. Despite its out-dated methods, the tactics in the book are still used by modern militaries today.

About The Author

Sun Tzu is generally believed to be the author though some scholars disagree. He is generally believed to have lived sometime between 770-476 B.C. Though again some scholars would disagree and place him between 475-221 B.C. Using the earlier date he was a general in the service of king He Lü of Wu. Sun Tzu’s work is such a definitive work on strategy that modern sources base not only military strategy on it but also business strategy, relationship strategy, and even parenting strategy.

Notable Quotes

“The swoop of a falcon strikes and kills its prey: this is called timing.”

“A skilled general will avoid the enemy when they are full of fight, and engage with them when their thoughts have turned to their beds.”

“If the enemy leaves you an opening, rush through it.”

“The highest form of warfare is to outthink your enemy.”

Good Stuff

  • The Art Of War is applicable to your life regardless of whether you work or watch the kids, are in college or are the company’s CEO. If you are a soldier this is a must read, if you are anything else this should be a priority.
  • This book’s advice in the tactics has proven true in the greatest military achievements in our history. Sun Tzu’s strategy has worked for the D-Day invasion, the Battle of Gettysburg, Napoleon’s wars, and the Vietnam War.

Bad Stuff

  • In several places the text is corrupt and difficult to translate or understand. This results in many different readings and interpretations, sometimes directly opposing each other.
